HOMIES AGAINST COVID

During the coronavirus shutdown, WordsUncaged is refocusing our efforts to support the essential work that Gernay Quinnie Jr is doing with Homies Against Covid in South LA. I first met Gernay in Los Angeles County Prison five years ago: he was a former member of the Raymond Crips, serving 19 years for armed robbery. To visit Gernay last week and witness the work that he is now doing in his West Athens neighborhood, helping our city’s most vulnerable populations, fills me with extraordinary pride in the man that he has become: Gernay is the living embodiment of what so many men, currently incarcerated throughout California, can achieve in their communities— if given the chance. He is waging warfare against violence, poverty and Covid 19, armed only with love, an iron will, hope and his homies.

The respect that Gernay has, as a “Big Homie”, in his neighborhood is being used to mobilize gang affiliated youth to respond to the needs of his underserved community, during this time of crisis. WordsUncaged is proud to support Homies Against Covid and we hope that you will join us in our efforts.

What is Homies Against Covid?

Gernay Quinnie is spearheading a team of gang affiliated youth and community members to serve West Athens district of south Los Angeles in partnership with WordsUncaged and Race 4 Communities.

This is a movement created by the people for the people, helping overlooked members of this community, including homeless men, women and children, survive the Covid 19 crisis. This innovative program mobilizes current and former gang affiliated youth to serve their community and harnesses their energies to positive effects during the LA county stay-at-home order. The program provides three meals a day for those in need, as well as education upon Coronavirus transmission in homeless communities, and youth diversion and educational support programs.
